Crazy Horse Canyon Landfill Holds “Closure Project” Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The Landfill Industry’s First Large-Scale Implementation of Closure Turf
Georgetown, SC - June 20, 2013 marked a turning point in the landfill industry as a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the completion of the Crazy Horse Canyon Landfill Closure Project near Salinas, California. This project, which will allow the creation of a solar farm on the existing 66-acre site, notably involved the first large-scale use of the ClosureTurf™ system. Created by Watershed Geosynthetics and sold exclusively through AGRU America Inc., the ClosureTurf™ system includes an impermeable geomembrane (plastic) bottom layer that is covered with engineered synthetic turf. Sand infill on top of the turf protects the entire system from UV exposure. The sand will also resist wind uplift force at the top of slopes. Unlike traditional vegetative covers, the drainage component of the ClosureTurf™ system produces clean water free of fertilizer and muddy runoff, both potential hazards environmental impacts to the local environment downstream waters.
Typically, landfill closures are complicated combinations of earthworks and specialty geosynthetic materials that require hauling turf from outside locations and hiring specialized equipment and labor. In contrast, the ClosureTurf™ system―which resists erosion caused by wind, rainfall, and concentrated flow; ultraviolet radiation degradation; and traffic―is relatively easy to construct. Further, by eliminating the traditional soil component, the ClosureTurf™ system removes all vegetation maintenance cost, such as mowing erosion repair, reseeding, etc., and It also reduces drainage system maintenance costs by approximately 70%. Use of the ClosureTurf final cover system at the Crazy Horse Canyon site should reduce the annual postclosure cost by approximately $46,600 per year, a savings of $1.38 million over 30 years.
