EREF's Regional Summit on Leachate Treatment to Be Held October 8 - 9 in Philadelphia
Raleigh, NC (September 3, 2013) - The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) will be holding a Regional Summit on Sustainable Solid Waste Practices & Research on October 8 - 9, 2013 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Regional Summit will focus on Managing & Treating Landfill Leachate.
Suitable for executives, managers, technical personnel, regulators and consultants, EREF's Regional Summits present key solid waste research findings and highlight impacts on practice as well as provide updates on legislative activities/policy as they relate to needed research.
"The Regional Summits were developed as part of an effort to expand EREF's educational mission," explains Bryan Staley, EREF President and Chief Executive Officer. "EREF has been broadening the educational programs serving the industry and disseminating the wealth of information developed by the foundation."
The first day of the Regional Summit will feature a tour of Waste Management Inc.'s Tullytown Resource Recovery Facility (separate registration required), one of the most advanced and state-of-the-art leachate treatment facilities in the U.S. The second day will include presentations on managing and treating landfill leachate. Leachate treatment is becoming more challenging and typically is one of the largest operating costs for landfill owners. Publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) face more stringent discharge standards today than ever before, which are resulting in increased limitations being placed on accepting leachate from landfills, with some facilities no longer accepting leachate at all. Thus, landfill owners must seek new and more efficient means to cost-effectively treat leachate by either making it acceptable to POTWs or by managing it on-site.
