SWANA at 50

By: Trotti, John Comments

We’re hard at work on a special SWANA’s 50th Anniversary issue that will present highlights stretching from the Association’s 1962 birth in Southern California under its initial banner as the Government Refuse Collection and Disposal Association (GRCDA) to today where as of the end of March 2012, SWANA membership risen to had grown to just shy of 8000, 60% of whom are employed in the public sector, 37 % in the private sector, with the remaining 3% are retired or students.

The issue, which will include a liberal sprinkling of recollections from over the years, is scheduled to mail in July in time for SWANA’s WASTECON 2012, set for August 14–16, 2012 in National Harbor, MD, just a few miles outside of Washington, DC (Register online or download a printable form).

There are hundreds of reasons to belong to SWANA and attend WASTECON, but let me suggest just one: the association’s Young Professionals Group, whose goal is to promote membership involvement in SWANA and provide young professionals with the knowledge, connections, and resources needed to succeed in the solid waste industry. These are the people who will guide SWANA and the industry over the next half century.
