As many of you know—and a few of you may actually remember the birth—the Government Refuse Collection and Disposal Association (GRCDA) sprang into life a half century ago, doing business today as the Solid Waste Association of North America.
In 1962 I was going through fuel at an average rate of 400 gallons per hour in my beloved A-4 Skyhawk, a pocket-sized single-seat attack plane so for me, memorable events included carrier ops, hours and hours of ripping along at 500 knots, 50 feet above stunningly blue Caribbean seas, and as the year came to an end, participation in the activities associated with President Kennedy’s “Cuber Crisis.” Not only had the Marine Corps tossed me the keys to what is still today my choice as the greatest toy ever conceived by man, but they even paid me $212.00 per month to put it through its paces. It should come as no big surprise that I was not aware of GRCDA’s birth or transformation to its present form until I became editor of MSW Management in 1992.
Since then, SWANA has become central not only to my job performance but as a window into the workings of a most interesting and challenging endeavor.
So how about you? As I pointed out my March/April editorial, we are working at putting together a special issue honoring the association, and we are looking for photos and memories from you. When did you first come in contact with GRCDA or SWANA, and what are your memories? We want all the “who…where…whats” we can get, along with photos or other memorabilia that you’d like to share with your cohorts.
Our deadline for materials for the issue is April 11, so don’t wait until the last minute. Send them by e-mail to jtrotti@forester.net, or by regular mail to the address below. We will scan the originals and send them right back to you.
