As I warned several weeks ago, I had accepted the invitation to deliver the keynote address at this year’s LMOP Conference and Expo in Baltimore, a city in the throes of anticipation of the upcoming Super Bowl.
The total experience was something of a mixed bag, the low part being my talk, which was a mere shadow of the one I had polished to perfection in the security of my room. Though I fumbled my way through the recitation, no one threw a tomato my way, as had been the case once in Provo, UT, in 1981, during the public comment tour presenting the results of the MX Basing Mode Analysis, in which the Air Force was attempting to meet NEPA requirements to assess the environmental impacts of its proposed mobile missile system. Thankfully, the LMOP audience—more than 700 strong this year—was less judgmental than the Brigham Young University natives, who viewed the Air Force with less fondness than marauders from a distant galaxy.
But then there was the LMOP conference itself – a fine event in every regard.
If you deal with landfill gas and have not gone to an LMOP conference, allow me to suggest that you’re missing out on a great opportunity to rub elbows with its partners who represent every aspect of the methane management spectrum, not just those with the LFG, but those looking to make use of it.
LMOP was created and designed to provide assistance to its partners and by all accounts has been doing a stellar job for many years.
Even if you have no interest in LFG, the LMOP experience is worth noticing. It’s a pleasure to see its staff serving as a clearinghouse rather than attempting to tell industry professionals what they need or how to conduct their business. Next year will mark LMOP’s 17th Conference and Expo, and if this year’s growth is any measure, it will attract even more attendees.
On a similar note, it’s not too late to get out and spend some quality time with the Landfill Gas industry leaders and innovators. Later this month SWANA will be hosting its Landfill Symposium (in Atlanta February 27-28) and then the terrific Landfill Gas Symposium comes to Las Vegas March 18-20.
