Boom or bust times, staff turnover is
a constant challenge…one made all the more critical by changes in the waste
management landscape. Historically the challenge has been met by on-the-job
experience, but I doubt you or anyone else feels this is adequate in bringing
people in sensitive positions up to speed quickly and
effectively.
Prior to this fall, UCLA’s Extension
program offered an on-campus course on MSW and recycling for local area
participants. This effort has led to the development of a six-course Web-based
program,
developed in conjunction with the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
Designed for those seeking to become familiar with the state-of-the-art in
recycling and waste management, the program addresses environmental,
technological, political, legal, and economic aspects of recycling and waste
management policies. Basic themes of the six courses are those of fundamental
principles, recycling, technology, law and regulations, case studies, and an
independent research project as the capstone. Details of the program can be found at www.mswmanagement.com/pdfs/Recycling_MSWM_09.pdf.
Industrial
managers and engineers, government staff, disposal firm employees, community
representatives, public sector employees, and public policy analysts seeking a
career in waste management will find the program invaluable in their
professional development. If you are interested, I urge you not to delay, as
enrollment is limited.
