Continuing our summer long
showcase of SWANA’s updated training courses, SWANA had an opportunity to talk
with Joe Williams, Owner of Common
Sense Consulting of Franklin, TN, the course contractor for the updated Manager
of Collection Systems set to premiere at WASTECON 2009.
What is new and exciting
about the Manager of Collection Systems Course? Hopefully an emphasis on teamwork and an
understanding of how all the parts fit together. In twenty-five years,
I’ve lived this industry from grunt to geek, seen great successes and true
failures. The new course will highlight the proven methods and help polish
us all as professionals.
What is one thing students
can expect to take away from this course? The comfort that no situation is absolutely unique
(somebody else somewhere has faced it) and the comfort that no one answer is
correct in every situation. It is an excellent framework of best practices
with the flexibility to let local managers manage.
Why is this course valuable
to the solid waste professional?
It is valuable to each of us, no matter our assigned task, because every step of
the process is interdependent on the other. No matter how great a disposal
facility you have, if no one brings you what needed to be collected, you
lose. No matter how great your collection system might be, if there is no
place to take what you’ve collected, you lose. It is a great overview of
the first step (collection) of an intricate system that remains the front line
of defense for the health, safety and welfare of every community in this nation
and the world.
