Join SWANA at the 2010 Thinking Outside the Blue Box Conference for a special presentation on the use of social marketing and social media to promote recycling. Kelly Dennings, education and outreach project manager for the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, will be presenting a special lunch session on Monday, February 8, 2010, dedicated to this topic.

Her presentation, titled “Use of Social Marketing and Social Media to Promote Recycling in North Carolina on a Shoestring Budget,” will discuss social media as a communication strategy of social marketing and its use as a cost-effective way to raise awareness about recycling. Using social marketing as a framework, the presentation will discuss background research and audience segmentation prior to beginning a campaign, as well as the ins-and-outs of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc. The session will also present other low-budget education and outreach options such as guerilla marketing and outreach events.

SWANA’s 2010 Thinking Outside the Blue Box Conference will be held February 8–9, 2010, at the Embassy Suites Charlotte-Concord in Charlotte, North Carolina. The two-day event is dedicated solely to recycling and special waste issues and will feature more than 20 speakers in over 11 hours of technical content. The conference is held in conjunction with SWANA’s Winter Training Center, which offers three updated certification courses, Manager of Recycling Systems, Managing Compost Programs, and Managing MSW Collection Systems. The Training Center also offers the Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) Certification Course, Managing Transfer Station Systems Certification Course and the FEMA Debris Management Course.
