A Glossary of Solid Waste Accessory Terms
- Cart: An upright receptacle mounted on wheels 8 to 12 inches in diameter. Made of injection-molded heavy-duty plastic, it is used primarily for an individual household’s refuse.
- Container/Curbside Bin: A larger receptacle of high-density injected polyethylene or metal, often used for commercial and industrial waste, and in multifamily apartment buildings. The residential version, and the institutional version used in schools and offices, may be called a curbside bin and may not have wheels.
- Lifter/Tipper: A fully automated lift arm or a semi-automated collection mechanism that raises the receptacle and empties its contents into the collection vehicle. Terms are used interchangeably.
