Sustainable waste management is critical to the health and well-being of all people. But as urbanization accelerates worldwide, the challenges faced in solid waste management and wastewater treatment are increasing dramatically. While many conferences focus on the technical aspects of waste management, WasteThe Social Context ’08 is unique in addressing the environmental, social and economic implications. The event follows North America’s first-ever conference on the social implications of waste, hosted in 2005 by the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence. The 2005 event was rated as a great success, attracting nearly 200 delegates to hear researchers and practitioners from 20 countries present their research and share their expertise. Topics for WasteThe Social Context ’08 will include public perceptions and behaviour, social forces influencing waste streams, environmental policy, waste management in urban settings, stakeholder participation, developing countries and countries in transition, international trade in waste products, and waste economics, among others. The keynote speaker will be Heather Rogers, acclaimed journalist, filmmaker, and author of “Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage.” Approximately 400 international decision-makers, researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders are expected to attend the conference.
