SWACO “Honors for “Going Green”

It’s a call for entries as SWACO gets ready to honor the best and most innovative waste reduction programs of 2007. The Third Annual Central Ohio Emeralds will be presented at the Hilton Columbus at Easton, Wednesday May 7, 2008 beginning at 11:30am. Communities, organizations, businesses, schools, and individuals will be honored in six categories; Leadership, Partnership, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Education, and Litter Clean up.

In two short years, the Emeralds have become the premier program honoring green initiatives in Central Ohio. SWACO Executive Director Ron Mills credits the many Emerald applicants and recipients. “We know many have worked hard on going green in 2007. We look forward to hearing about their stories as we issue this call for entries for the 2008 Emeralds.”

Award nominations must arrive at SWACO by 5pm March 14, 2008. Nomination information is available at “www.swaco.org/Emeralds.aspx . Tickets for the luncheon are $25 per person or a table of 10 for $250. Reservations can also be made by calling 614-871-5100. This year’s Emerald trophies are being sponsored by Anheuser-Busch of Columbus. Deadline for reservations is Thursday, May 1, 2008.

The speaker for The 2008 Emeralds Luncheon is actor Ed Begley, Jr. Known for turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, he has served as chairman of the Environmental Media Association. Begley also participates on the boards of many other environmental organizations. His work has earned awards from many of those groups. Currently, he is the co-star of the hit HGTV series “Living with Ed,” a look at the day-to-day realities of “living green” with his not so environmentalist wife Rachelle Carson. Begley’s address is sponsored by Columbus Coca-Cola, a Coca-Cola Enterprises Company.

Actor Ed Begley Jr. To Highlight SWACO Emerald Awards

SWACO is proud to announce actor Ed Begley, Jr. as the speaker at the 2008 Emerald Awards Luncheon on Wednesday May 7, 2008 at 11:30am at the Hilton Inn at Easton. Begley’s address is being sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottlers Inc. of Ohio/Kentucky.

SWACO Executive Director Ron Mills welcomes Begley to Greater Columbus. “We are very pleased to have an actor with Mr. Begley’s reputation on the environment as part of the 2008 Emerald Awards. His insight on all things green will certainly add to the excitement of the afternoon.”

Bio: Ed Begley Junior

When it comes to taking personal responsibility for the environment, few individuals can match the record of actor and activist Ed Begley, Jr. Known for turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, he has served as chairman of the Environmental Media Association and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. He serves on the boards of organizations including the Thoreau Institute, the Earth Communications Office, Tree People and Friends of the Earth. His work has earned awards from numerous environmental groups including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Coalition for Clean Air, Heal the Bay, the Santa Monica Baykeeper and the Southern California Gas Company. Currently, he is the co-star of the hit HGTV series Living with Ed, a look at the day-to-day realities of “living green” with his not so environmentalist wife Rachelle Carson. The series has currently just finished airing its 2nd season.

Inspired by the works of his Academy Award-winning father, Begley became an actor. He first came to audiences’ attention for his portrayal of Dr. Victor Ehrlich on the long-running hit television series St. Elsewhere, for which he received six Emmy nominations. Since then, Begley has moved easily between feature films, television and theatre projects. Begley has appeared in A Mighty Wind, the follow-up to the American Comedy Award-winning film Best In Show starring Christopher Guest, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. He can also be seen in the most recent Christopher Guest film For Your Consideration. Other feature film credits include Batman Forever, The Accidental Tourist and The Inlaws. In 2008, Begley will have supporting roles in the theatrical comedy Pineapple Express penned by Seth Rogan, and the HBO feature Recount starring Kevin Spacey.

On television, Begley has had recurring roles on Six Feet Under and Arrested Development. He has also guest starred on such series as The West Wing and The Practice, in addition to David E. Kelly’s latest show Boston Legal. Most recently, Begley was featured in Veronica Mars and CSI: Miami.
