New Website from Mack Details Environmental Accomplishments;
Company Marks Earth Day 2008 with Public Activities at Science Museum
Mack Trucks, Inc. is marking Earth Day 2008 by showcasing its environmental initiatives on the World Wide Web and in its home community of the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania.
The company today launched a new website highlighting the environmental aspects of its truck products and improvements in environmental performance at its production, development and administrative facilities around North America. The site can be accessed from the home page of Mack’s award-winning corporate website, www.macktrucks.com, and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about how Mack is addressing the environmental challenges of its business.
“Being ‘green’ is a consideration in everything we do,” said Dennis Slagle, Mack president and CEO. “We’ve made significant advancements in our products and operations from an environmental standpoint. This new website is a great way to share what we’re doing with our customers, employees, public officials and neighbors in this community,” he added.
Slagle noted that the site gives visitors the ability to search for information about environmental activities and achievements at specific Mack facilities in North America. “For example, visitors can learn that the water saved each year from the New River Valley plant’s conservation efforts is enough to fill 15 Olympic-sized swimming pools, and that the Mack Remanufacturing Center in Middletown, PA recycles more than 95 percent of its waste,” he said.
Other features of the new website include:
- An “Emissions Calculator” function that allows visitors to see how much cleaner new Mack engines and truck models are compared to their predecessors – and how much cleaner they will become after the next round of federal diesel engine emissions regulations;
-
- Information on Mack’s efforts in support of its environmental care core corporate value in the local community and society at large – such as local environmental projects funded through the Mack Community Grants program, the company’s participation in industry-government initiatives such as the SmartWay Transport Partnership and the EPA Climate Leaders program, and the various awards and recognition the company has received for its environmental activities; and
-
- A look ahead at technological advances in areas like hybrid electric drive, alternative fuels, and aerodynamic design – all of which will have an impact on the environmental performance of MACK® trucks in the future.

The launch of the new website comes as Mack prepares to mark Earth Day 2008 in partnership with the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown, PA. The Center received a Mack Community Grant last year to fund its Earth Day 2008 programs, including a community dialogue with experts in environmental fields on April 22 and numerous interactive activities for children the following weekend.
The theme of the Da Vinci Earth Day commemoration is “YES, In My Backyard!” and the discussion and activities will focus on practical ways that individuals and the community can make progress in environmental improvement.
Mack’s director of health, safety and environment, Scott Morris, will participate in the community dialogue at the Da Vinci Science Center, and he sees it as an opportunity to share the lessons Mack has learned about the advantages of a sustainable environmental strategy.
“I’m looking forward to sharing our experience in environmental management on the new website and in the Earth Day forum, because I think many of the principles we’ve followed are relevant to individuals and families as well,” Morris said.
“Becoming more energy efficient, reducing unnecessary use of natural resources like water, and embracing recycling and waste reduction strategies – these are all important parts of our environmental strategy at Mack. And the success of our strategy so far can help inspire people to adopt these same principles at home and in their daily lives,” he said.
Information about the April 22 community dialogue and the other Earth Day 2008 events sponsored by Mack can be found at the Da Vinci Science Center’s website, www.davinci-center.org.
