Resource Recovery Technologies: An Inside Look At Operations

”Waste processing” What does it mean? How is it done? What is the end result?

Annually, Resource Recovery Technologies (RRT) processes over 750,000 tons of non-hazardous municipal solid waste (MSW) into enough refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to power 55,000 homes. RRT is also the largest processor of yard, wood and food waste in the Midwest; processing over 400,000 cubic yards every year into compost, which is marketed to landscapers, road-building contractors and the general public. How we process waste is depicted in the new RDF, food waste and yard waste process pictorials on our website at www.rrtmn.com.

Refuse-derived fuel (RDF):

At RRT’s Elk River and Newport , Minnesota processing plants, MSW is converted into a fuel source. The pictorial on our website illustrates the RDF process step-by-step from the delivery of MSW to our processing plants to the loading of the RDF into semi trailers for shipment to either the Xcel Energy or Great River Energy power plants to generate electricity. Compost:

At RRT’s six yard waste and food waste processing facilities in the Minneapolis -St. Paul Metro Area, yard and food wastes and other organic materials are composted to produce a soil amendment. Yard waste includes leaves, grass, brush, stumps and logs. Food waste includes plate waste, non-recyclable paper and biodegradable products. The pictorials on our website illustrate the composting process step-by-step, from the delivery of food and yard wastes to the selling of finished compost for use in gardens, on playing fields, for land reclamation, and on roadside projects.
