The electrification of fleet vehicles made another push forward recently. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) now has in its possession a fully electric Mack LR collection truck. DSNY will be putting this singular vehicle to the test in hopes that it, and possibly hundreds more, can help the department meet its goal of reducing its greenhouse gases by 80% by the year 2035.
If this is successful, DSNY could be on its way to replacing its entire fleet with electric vehicles.
I was in Allentown, PA, for the unveiling of the electric Mack LR that DSNY will be testing. I spoke to Mack Senior Vice President of North American Sales & Marketing, Jonathan Randall, as well as DSNY Deputy Commissioner, Rocky DiRico, about this first step in electrifying New York’s Department of Sanitation fleet.
Bonus video: Mack Trucks was kind enough to let me test drive their fully electric Mack LR. This should give you an idea of how quiet this collection vehicle is in operation.
